About this teaching resource
This Reading Workshop Mini Lessons - Launching: Flip-Chart provides some sample mini lessons for Year F (K) to support you in launching your Reading Workshop, however, the most powerful lessons will be those that are generated by your on-going observations and 'noticings' of how your particular students are working and what they need.
Children experience a powerful introduction to literacy when they:
- Are read to often, every day
- Join in as a reader during Big Book Shared Reading, every day and
- Independently practise being a reader, every day
We hope you find this Flip Chart useful in guiding your mini lessons. Enlarge them to A3 and make your own Big Book, so you can easily refer back to lessons you have completed, and those still left to do.
The purpose of this Launching the Reading Workshop unit is to establish the structures and routines of the Reading Workshop. A critical goal for the unit is to empower Year 1 students with the actions of successful readers, 'Good Readers'.
By the end of the unit, teachers should have found out about every child as a reader through observations and a reading conference.
What students need to know at the end of this unit:
- We are a community of readers
- We choose to read for enjoyment at school and at home
- We reread favourite books
- We have a range of material to choose from
- Readers choose books that are 'just right' for them
- We discuss books daily with a teacher, a classmate, buddy
- We have the same routine in our Reading Workshop every day
