About this teaching resource
The main purpose for this document, Class Charts - Suggestions for Learning Specific High Frequency Words, Yrs F-2, is to give suggestions about teaching each of the 1-100+ Oxford List high frequency words - and also whatt other words they help us to learn.
Print it out as A3 and create a large Class Spelling Journal. There are suggestions on each page for students to notice (and teacher to record) interesting things about each word and create new words from that word - using onset and rime, prefixes and suffixes, compound words etc.
Then these words can be put up on the Word Wall.
Since these are the words used over 50% of the time in children's reading and writing, it is so important that these words are learned well. They will also lead to the coirrect spelling of the many words linked to these 100 words.
Although the focus is on learning how to spell words, learning the correct spelling will also help children to read the words.
There is also much more information about all aspects of teaching spelling in the book Spelling K-8: Planning and Teaching, by Faye Bolton and Diane Snowball, available from Amazon.com.au and in Focus on Spelling (films of teaching spelling in classrooms), by Diane Snowball, available from Stenhouse. All aspects of spelling are also dealt with in the document Teaching and Learning about Spelling, by Diane Snowball, available from www.teachific.com.au
