About this teaching resource

Introduce your students to the key thinking terms that support scientific explorations and investigations.

Each chart in this set defines one of the following words: consider, describe, explore, identify, observe, recognise, represent.

Support your students through planned teaching:

  • Introduce each term as it links to a scientific investigation
  • Demonstrate what it looks like
  • Have students practice it with you
  • Keep the chart visible to enable students to reference it independently. (You could also make your own chart with the class.)
  • Add any useful samples to the chart of what it looks like
  • Have students practice it by themselves and see their thinking and investigative power grow.

Knowing what thinking action is required for each of these terms means our students can activate thinking actions efficiently and successfully.
