About this teaching resource
Spelling Pattern Explorations guide students in exploring the word of English spelling patterns. This approach to word study empowers learners to be active thinkers, explorers and discoverers. This is learning at its best.
As with all new processes and routines, spelling pattern explorations are most successfully implemented when first modelled and practiced together as a class. Once students are familiar with the process and understand the elements they will be ready to explore independently.
Select spelling pattern explorations that best suit the needs of your students based on what you observe in their writing.
Each Spelling Pattern Exploration introduces students to a spelling pattern. Students then begin the exploration process:
- Search for words that contain the spelling pattern
- Sort the words by the sound made by the spelling pattern
- Write generalisations: what patterns you noticed, what you discovered about this spelling pattern, what else you noticed, what you are wondering
Spelling Pattern Explorations are a tremendous addition to Word Work in Yrs 3-5.
