About this teaching resource

Non Fiction Posters (K-2) and (3-6)

Use these attractively designed posters to help your students be clear about the features of non-fiction texts. Students can use the ideas to write their own, improved non-fiction texts with the full range of graphic, organisational and print features available to them. Use the posters to help students with their reading and comprehension of non-fiction texts.

  • Print off the Non Fiction Poster that suits the activity you are working on with the students
  • Model how you might use a Feature (Graphic, Print or Organisational) on the whiteboard or in a blank Big Book.
  • Have students practice with you
  • Have students practice independently in their own books.
  • Have students share how the Features helped them as a reader and/or writer
  • As you introduce different Non Fiction Posters (and Features) with different activities, gradually allow students more independence and flexibility in which Features they use for any new activity
  • Enable: Offer small group support for those writers/thinkers who require more guided practice in using a particular Feature
  • Have individual students use the Non Fiction Posters within their normal Bookmaking or Writer’s Notebook work
  • Display the posters (enlarged) in a blank Big Book, or on a wall in your classroom
  • Have students glue them into their individual books as part of Bookmaking or Writer’s Notebook work
